DIARY OF A LAW STUDENT. Episode 2

The time was 9 am on a Tuesday morning and the students were seated ready to take their first lecture for the day. Some people were reading, some chatting and some others were taking selfies.
Fifteen minutes later, as the lecturer walked in, some students that were loitering began to hurry into the class. Those that were not fast enough ended up outside and they missed the lecture.

"Good day class," said Mr Ejele
"Good day sir"  the students responded.
"Who can explain the principle of law established in the case of Central London Property Trust v High Trees House," asked the lecturer. "But before then, (he continues) course rep, circulate the attendance. All of you outside please can you leave the corridor. I don't want to see you near the class. And those of you that think that you can just manipulate your name into the attendance list, I'm sorry for you because I'll fish you out."
As Emilia raised her hand to respond to the question that was asked, the lecturer intercepted and pointed at a lady sitting at the fourth row of the class. Slightly changing his voice to a more serious tone, he said: "hey madam, can you stand up?"
A lady dressed in a sleeveless black dress reluctantly stood up.
"What are you putting on?" Said Mr Ejele "Is this part of our dress code? (he continues) Do you not have the faculty handbook or should I read it out to you? Check your handbook, this is not part of our dressing. At least you could have put on a jacket. Please carry your bag and leave the class and don't waste our time."
As she was leaving, he continued "I don't know why you students will like to flout the rules anyhow. Hey, you over there! Yes you looking back, stand up!"
A boy dressed in a white starched and properly ironed shirt on a black trouser with a bow tie stood up.
"What's this you are wearing? I'm sure that you are fully aware of the dress code for this profession. You cannot put on a bow tie for this lecture. You can save that for your dinner night. Now leave the class immediately!"
"My dear go ahead with your explanation before we end up doing nothing today," said Mr Ejele.
Emilia began to explain the rule of law established in the case and as soon as she was done the lecturer began to expand on the principle as he used other cases and analogies to buttress his point.

After Mr Ejele finished explaining, a lady wearing a gold and black braids stood up to ask a question.
Lady: excuse me, sir, in a situation whereby the plaintiff.......(before she completed her statement, he immediately interrupted her)
Ejele: just stop right there! What are all these that you're carrying on your head? I don't even know how I didn't see you in the first place. Haven't you discovered in the faculty handbook that ladies are only allowed to carry black or brown on your hair? You even stood up to ask a question. Please leave my class."
As she was leaving, he began to address the students. "Why on earth will someone know the right thing to do and just decide to do the wrong thing? Don't you know that when you're doing the right thing, you are completely free from the query and you'll not fall into unnecessary problems? Anyways it is those of you that are so stubborn and have refused to do the right thing that will keep missing lectures and keep having issues. In fact, it is obvious that some people are not just ready to be serious. And let me tell you, if you miss my lecture, you are not likely to pass this course because most of my exam questions are addressed in class. So if you people like just keep doing whatever you please. But just don't come to my office to beg.

Course rep approaches Mr Ejele to remind him that it was time for another lecture.

Mr Ejele: course rep! What time will you guys be free because I need to complete what I have to teach you guys today? We've not covered anything and I need to come back later in the day. Decide with the class and get back to me. I'll be downstairs with final year students. Make sure you get back to me.

When he said this, the whole class became noisy. Many people murmured because they hated the idea of having a particular lecture twice a day especially when it was finally going to be scheduled for 4 pm. Although it was already a ritual when it comes to that particular course, it was nevertheless unavoidable.
As this went on, he took hold of his attendance sheet and left the class.

When the appointed time for the lecture reached, some students came while some didn't. Those that kept missing lectures had to face the consequences at the end which included missing impromptu quizzes and presentations.
Some other people also didn't stop flouting the dress code and that made them face the consequences which included being sent out during quizzes or during exams. The problem about flouting the dress code is that you will be so delayed that the time you'll have remaining will be so short and worse of, you can end up failing that course.

For instance, Genevieve, a student that never complies with the dressing rules, prepared seriously for her exam and was fully ready to unleash all she had read into her answer scripts and along the line, she was sent out because her hair was made with a purple attachment. The tension of how her time was ticking destabilized her because she spent a lot of time trying to get rid of the braids and that ended up frustrating her. Even the things she prepared to unleash in her scripts were pointless because the time was short.

Doing the wrong things will always cost something that can never be replaced. It's pretty clear that Genevieve thought she had everything under control and that her hair didn't matter, not until she faced the consequence. She had been flouting the rules and was never caught so she thought that everything was under control.

Nothing is hidden under the sun. Whenever the time comes, it will surely be revealed.
